Apple is preparing to introduce cameras into its Apple Watch lineup, integrating artificial intelligence-powered Visual Intelligence technology, according to reports. The update, expected by 2027, will bring enhanced AI-driven capabilities to wearable devices.
Sources indicate that Apple plans to position the cameras differently based on the model. The standard Apple Watch Series is expected to incorporate a camera directly within the display, while the Apple Watch Ultra may feature an external camera near the digital crown. This configuration is designed to enable real-time environmental awareness and AI-assisted functionalities.
Beyond the Apple Watch, Apple is reportedly working on similar AI-enhanced camera technology for future AirPods. This would align with Apple's broader wearable AI development strategy. The company previously introduced Visual Intelligence with the iPhone 16, utilizing AI to extract data from images, such as recognizing events from flyers or identifying locations for detailed insights.
Currently, Apple relies on external AI models to support these features. However, reports suggest Apple is developing proprietary AI technology to power future wearable devices. The Apple Watch equipped with a camera and AI-driven AirPods are both anticipated to launch in 2027.
Apple’s AI strategy in wearables is being led by Mike Rockwell, a key figure in the company's technology division. Rockwell, who previously oversaw Vision Pro, is also responsible for a significant upgrade to Siri’s language model. The update aims to improve AI interactions across Apple’s ecosystem.
Additionally, Apple’s AI advancements are expected to extend to augmented reality glasses, further integrating wearable AI technology.
